Carl Michael Bellman (1740–1795), Swedish drunkard, songwriter and poet, wrote Fredmans sång nr. 21 in 1787. My free translation owes a lot to Carl Zuckmayer’s fine translation of some of Bellman’s eight verses into German, the second verse here is partly Hauenstein, partly Bellman.
lyrics
And So We Go Carl Michael Bellman, translation Jan Hauenstein
(Em) (Am7) (D7) (G)
And so we go, some (Bm)fast, some (G)slow,
Leave (Em)lovers, (Am)wine, and (Am7)feasts and (D7)song,
When (G)death calls us, "You (Bm)have to (G)go,
It’s (Em)time, come, (D7) trot a(G)long."
And he who brags like a (Bm)madman (G)still
And (Em)thinks he’s (Am)noble, (Am7) fine and (D7)gay,
Watch (G)out now! For the (Bm)carpenter (G)will
Finish (Em)work on your (D7)coffin to(G)day!
If the (D7)grave’s too cold and (G)dark for you,
Come (D7)on! Then take a (G)sip or two!
One (Am)more, two (G)more, a(B7)nother one (Em)yet,
And (Am)death will (D7)lose its (G)threat! (Am) (G) (B7) (Em) (Am) (D7) (G)
While there’s still time to (Bm)feast and (G)sing,
Come, (Em)drink with (Am)me and (Am7)drain your (D7)glass,
We’ll (G)shout out loud, "Death, (Bm)where’s thy (G)sting?"
We’ll (Em)find out (D7)soon, a(G)las!
But now, old man, your (Bm)crutch lay (G)down,
And (Em)you, young (Am)man, my (Am7)law o(D7)bey,
And the (G)finest ladies (Bm)in this (G)town
Shall be (Em)in your (D7)arms to(G)day!
If the (D7)grave’s too cold and (G)dark for you,
Come (D7)on! Then take a (G)sip or two!
One (Am)more, two (G)more, a(B7)nother one (Em)yet,
And (Am)death will (D7)lose its (G)threat! (Am) (G) (B7) (Em) (Am) (D7) (G)
And if you rant and (Bm)rage and (G)spit,
You (Em)know full (Am)well death (Am7)takes no (D7)bribes,
And (G)when you sip your (Bm)final (G)sip,
The (Em)worm with (D7)you im(G)bibes!
If we drink cheap beer or (Bm)sip the finest (G)wine,
When (Em)death calls(Am)us, we’re (Am7)all his (D7)slaves,
And (G)in the end the evening (Bm)star will (G)shine
Alike on (Em)poor and (D7)rich folks (G)graves!
If the (D7)grave’s too cold and (G)dark for you,
Come (D7)on! Then take a (G)sip or two!
One (Am)more, two (G)more, or (B7)maybe (Em)three,
And you will (Am)die more (D7)easi(G)ly.
One (Am)more, two (G)more, or (B7)maybe (Em)three, (hold)
And you will (Am)die more (D7)easi(G)ly.

Doch nun, alter Mann, leg' deine Krücke nieder,
