lyrics

I Come And Stand At Every Door Nâzim Hikmet Ran/Jeanette Turner/Scottish Traditional

- Instrumental verse -
I (G)come and (F)stand at (F/D)every (G)door,
But none can (F)hear my (F/D)silent (G)tread.
(C) I knock and (G)yet re(F)main un(G)seen,
(Am) For I am (Em)dead, for (F)I am (G)dead.

I'm only (F)seven, (F/D) although I (G)died
In Hiro(F)shima, (F/D) long a(G)go.
(C) I'm seven (G)now, as (F)I was (G)then,
(Am) When children (Em)die, they (F)do not (G)grow.

My hair was (F)scorched by (F/D)swirling (G)flame,
My eyes grew (F)dim, my (F/D)eyes grew (G)blind.
(C) Death came and (G)turned my (F)bones to (G)dust,
(Am) And that was (Em)scattered (F)by the (G)wind.
- Instrumental verse -

I need no (F)fruit, I (F/D)need no (G)rice,
I need no (F)sweets, nor (F/D)even (G)bread.
(C) I ask for (G)nothing (F)for my(G)self,
(Am) For I am (Em)dead, for (F)I am (G)dead.

All that I (F)ask is (F/D)that for (G)peace
You work to(F)day, you (F/D)work to(G)day
(C) So that the (G)children (F)of this (G)world
May (Am)live and (Em)grow, and (F)laugh and (G)play.

© Turkish poet Nâzim Hikmet Ran (1902-1963), Jeanette Turner.
The lyrics are Jeanette Turner´s loose translation of Nâzim Hikmet Ran´s famous poem
‘Kız Çocuğu’ (The Dead Little Girl).
The melody is the traditional song ‘The Great Silkie Of Sule Skerry’.

The way I play it, partly The Byrds´ version, partly Anne Hills´.

Why no free uploads? I cover songs. Register them with the German music rights agency GEMA. They hopefully reimburse the artists. The tax authorities demand that I make (not lose) a little money each year...
