On the boardwalk at Coney Island, there's a riveting game
called "Shoot the Freak."

In front of the sign, a sunburned, shirtless goomba
in too-tight jeans and a gold chain paces up and down with a mic.

"Shoot da freak! Shoot da freak! Anybody can do this,
everybody can play this! Come on down and shoot da freak!
Aaaaaanybody can shoot da freak!"

The object is to shoot a "live human target" with a paintball gun
in the face, preferably.
We stopped to watch a little boy load a weapon with small
fluorescent balls.
Then a guy wearing a helmet and pads splattered with colors
started dashing around the yard below the boardwalk.

Pop! The kid nailed him in the face mask. Onlookers cheered.

"Is this weird?" I murmured. Terra shrugged.
"What do you think makes him a freak?" I wondered aloud.
"Maybe that he agreed to do this?"

After a while, goomba Johnny noticed us.
"Come on girls, you know you wanna shoot da freak," he said.
"Aaaaanybody can shoot da freak."
Then, with the mic lowered, "It'll be like Girls Gone Wild,
except you'll have clothes on." He laughed at his own joke.

We rolled our eyes. Then Terra and Kristin stepped up.

Anybody can shoot the freak.
