(Cj7) (Fj7) (Cj7) (Fj7)
(Cj7) Saw two monuments lately, in Bris(Fj7)sac and in Voelklingen,
For the (Dm7)dead of half-forgotten wars - (G)dedicated to the glorious fallen. (G4) (G)
For (C)king and for (Am)country, they (G)said,
For (Dm7)king and for country, (G) and now you´re long (Am) dead. (F) (C) (G)
The (Am)poison gas rolled, and it (Em)blinded Pierre´s eyes,
It (G)rolled on the ground and it (D)fell from the skies,
And he (F)stumbled on blindly, in (C)fear, tears and pain,
And a (Fj7)scared man´s bullet lodged (G)right in his brain. (G4) (G)
Karl (Am)cowered in the trench they had (Em)dug just last night,
Thought of his (G)wife and his child, and he (D)hoped that he might
Make it (F)back home alive. Then a (C)tank crushed the trench -
Splintered (Fj7)bones, blood and gore, and a (G)horrible stench. (G4) (G)
And I (Cj7)sit by the monument in the (Fj7)shade of a tree,
(Dm7)Tears in my eyes, and it (G)almost seems to me
There are (Am)screams on the wind, I hear the (Em)ragged last breaths
Of those (Fj7)sent out by their masters to their (G) glorious deaths.
(Cj7) (Fj7) (Cj7) (Fj7) (Dm7) (G) (C) (F) (Fj7) (G) (G4) (G)
Big Jim (Am)led the attack, so brave, so (Em)young and unafraid,
When a (G)bayonet stopped him with its (D)cruel steel blade.
It went (F)in on one side, sliced right (C)through to the other.
“So (Fj7)sorry,” sighed the enemy, “It was (G)you or me, brother.” (G4) (G)
And I (Cj7)sit by the monument in the (Fj7)shade of a tree,
Tears (Dm7)roll down my face, and it (G)almost seems to me
There are (Am)ghosts on the wind, I hear the (Em)ragged last breaths
Of those (Fj7)sent out by cowards to their (G) glorious deaths. (G4) (G)
They (Am)call you the fallen, but you were (Em)killed and you died,
And you (G)screamed and you pleaded, prayed in (D)vain, and you cried,
You were (F)maimed, you were poisoned, shells (C)ripped you apart,
You were (Fj7)stabbed, you were strangled, you were (G)shot through the heart…(G4) (G)
For (C)king and for (Am)country, they (G)said,
For (Dm7)king and for country, (G) and millions are (Am) dead. (Am7)
(F) All the (G)glorious (Am)fallen, (Em7)
(Am) From their (Fj7)graves (G)(hold) I can hear them calling.
(Am) (Fj7) (F) (Fj7) (G) (Cj7)(hold) (Cj7)

Why no free uploads? I cover songs. Register them with the German music rights agency GEMA. They hopefully reimburse the artists. The tax authorities demand that I make (not lose) a little money each year......more
